Reading Challenge, 2011

<img:stuff/SFdiv1.gif>

Welcome to the Reading Challenge 2011. The idea is to set yourself a certain number of books to read in 2011 and then... to read that many books! After you read them, you have to write a review of that book. YOU set the amount of books you want to read this year - so don't tell me you don't have time for this. It can be as low as 5, or as high as 200. After you've written your review, don't forget to add a link to it to the wiki where you're listing the books you've read.

How to join up:

Follow the example below. write your name below, and then a link to the wiki-page where you will be keeping a list of the books you've read. Below that, keep a tally of how many books you've read, and also list when you joined the challenge. E.g.:

FAQ

Q: Can I re-read books I've already read?
A: You can re-read books you've already read prior to this year (providing you haven't already written a review on it) but you can't count the same book twice, even if you read it twice this year.

Q: How do I write a review?
A: Go to your ET diary. In the top right corner are a load of buttons. One of them says 'write a review'. Click it!

Q: It's February/March/November - can I still join?
A: Sure. But take when you're starting into consideration when deciding your goal.

Q: Can I count comics/graphic novels?
A: That's entirely up to you, and whether you personally count them as books or not. The point of this challenge is to get people to read more, so if you already read 300 comic books a year, then maybe you shouldn't count them. (NB: I know many people in other challenges count 3-5 comics/mangas as equivalent to one book).

2011-01-03 [Eyden13]: Yay!

2011-01-03 [Akayume]: Hokay. I think I can make it this year. o.o

2011-01-03 [hanhepi]: maybe i'll get close to my way lower goal this year.

2011-01-03 [windowframe]: This year I'm not so much planning to try and read as many as possible, but I've got a list of books that have been sitting unread on my shelves for ages that I'm determined to read this year. So if I just complete that list, I'll be happy. <_<

2011-01-03 [Akayume]: I agree. O.o I didn't realize how much uni could kick my arse. So I lowered my goal. XD

2011-01-04 [windowframe]: Sorry, I changed all the dates. Because I'm an evil English fascist like that. >=O

2011-01-04 [Ms. Steel]: You know, that thought crossed my mind.

2011-01-04 [Caterin S.]: I changed mine too. It kept on bothering me for being "wrong". It should be date/month/year, that's more logical. ;)

2011-01-04 [windowframe]: More logical to us, but if you always say dates as "July 25th, 1988" etc. (which, I think, is how most Americans do say dates) then it's logical to write them that way too.

2011-01-04 [Akayume]: Yes. XP Which sed to confuse the people in my French class when my teacher would do date month year.

2011-01-04 [Viking]: No, we should always go year-month-date. And the year should have 4 digits and the month and date should have 2 digits. That way the dates are sortable as strings =)

2011-01-05 [Chishio]: i hope i can reach mine this year.

2011-01-07 [hanhepi]: i don't mind writing the date with the year first, as long as it's the 4 digit year... i mean 4 digits when the first number could be a month anyway. once 2013 rolls around, it won't be too confusing to have a 2 digit year.

2011-01-10 [windowframe]: But the first number could be a date, too. :O So you're only safe in 2032. :P

2011-01-16 [All_Most PUNK]: My prize for last year's competition hasn't arrived yet, Silvie. I just thought I'd let you know.

2011-01-16 [Viking]: What's the prize? Is it a Schrödinger Cat?

2011-01-16 [All_Most PUNK]: I hope so, but not sure.

2011-01-16 [Viking]: Maybe it's Wooly Mammoth DNA.

2011-01-16 [All_Most PUNK]: I'd prefer the cat, honestly.

2011-01-16 [All_Most PUNK]: 4 years! I'll be old, blind and deaf by that time.

2011-01-16 [Akayume]: In that order?

2011-01-16 [All_Most PUNK]: Probably.

2011-01-16 [Viking]: But imagine how many great things you could do once you had a herd of wooly mammoths!

2011-01-16 [Akayume]: ....Could you put a wooly mammoth into a box and call it Schrodinger's mammoth?

2011-01-16 [Viking]: It would take a pretty large box, but I don't see why not.

2011-01-16 [Akayume]: "The bigger the better"?

2011-01-16 [All_Most PUNK]: Wouldn't you need Schrodinger to be alive? I mean,I'm pretty sure he has to put the animal himself in the box for it to be an official Schrodinger's animal.

2011-01-16 [Viking]: Yeah, as long as it's not shipped so that the receiver pays the costs.

2011-01-16 [Akayume]: Well, can't we bring him back in the same manner as the mammoths?

2011-01-16 [Viking]: We'll have to ask the Russians if they have a Schrödinger sample.

2011-01-16 [Akayume]: They have to. The Russians have everything.

2011-01-23 [▲.]: I will... actually finish this this year! D: I failed so miserably at reviews last year. I think I did, like.... one. :/

2011-01-23 [Viking]: I think most of us failed at actually writing reviews last year. >_<

2011-01-23 [Akayume]: Agreed. X3

2011-01-23 [Viking]: BTW, your reading list link goes to an empty page.

2011-01-23 [▲.]: Yes, I haven't made it yet! Gimme a minute. :P

2011-01-23 [Viking]: Ah, OK =)

2011-01-23 [▲.]: Now it's up! :3

2011-01-28 [Caterin S.]: Hey guys, I have a question of which I could use your opinions. The thing is that I'm planning on reading Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams at some point, but some ingenious person decided to split the trilogy in 12 parts when translating it to Finnish. So if I'm reading them for this contest, do you consider them as the trilogy (like the original English version), or 12-part series, which it technically is in Finnish? And how would I write the reviews?
Any ideas, thoughts?

2011-01-28 [Caterin S.]: (I realised that I already read The Dune as three part series, as it is published in Finnish without knowing that is was only a single book originally.)

2011-01-28 [Viking]: Eh, I'm not sure it matters. They're pretty long books as it is and the third one is often sold as two volumes.

2011-01-28 [hanhepi]: what was the ruling on graphic novels? i have 4 seiries from the stephen king dark tower ones, with the series being between 5 and 7 books long, but each book short (maybe 30 pages?), am i reviewing each book or each series?

also, should i be wearing gloves when i read these?

2011-01-29 [Caterin S.]: [hanhepi]: I read the first two books of the King's graphic novel adaptations and I thought they had enough content for a singular book, so I counted both as one - as each of them includes several comic magazines.

2011-01-29 [hanhepi]: cool

2011-02-26 [Viking]: I have a strange urge to create a graph tracking progress of everyone, kind of like a scrum burndown chart. I'm hopelessly geeky.

2011-02-28 [Chishio]: ... >.<
i have books to read, just haven't finished yet.

2011-03-10 [kians mummy]: how do i sign up for this

2011-03-10 [Viking]: Just edit the wiki.

2011-03-28 [Yncke]: Does proof reading a book that is going to be published count for this list?

2011-03-28 [kians mummy]: probably not, because its about reading a book, not just proof reading it, there is know point to it otherwise

2011-03-28 [Yncke]: Well, proof reading is just a very concentrated form of reading a book...

2011-03-28 [kians mummy]: but this is to do with reading the hole book not just what its about and bits of what happen in it

2011-03-28 [iippo]: Proof reading means you read something to make sure there are no mistakes or typos or such. So while it's not leisurely reading-for-fun, it's still certainly reading the whole book.
I think it would count, Yncke :) (Unless you wrote the book :P)

2011-03-28 [kians mummy]: true, thanks for that [iippo]

2011-03-28 [Yncke]: Thanks, [iippo]. (No, I didn't write it. Hm. Why would a published book written by yourself not count? >:-) )

2011-03-28 [windowframe]: Because no one can proof read their own work properly. :P Of course proof-reading counts. :)

2011-03-28 [iippo]: And also if you wrote it, you have a somewhat deeper insight into it than a regular reader. And you'd need to review it for the challenge :P "This book was wonderful, and the author of it is a bomb!"

2011-03-28 [Yncke]: I'm skipping the reviewing part, but I can see how that's a problem. :) ("Great book, I couldn't've done it better!")

2011-03-28 [Akayume]: And I think it's more your own choice of what you think should count. (:

2011-04-02 [All_Most PUNK]: I'm thinking maybe I should kick this into the second semester of the year and make it just 60 books or so.

2011-04-02 [kians mummy]: [windowframe] don't you think there is to much talk going on now

2011-04-02 [All_Most PUNK]: Too much talk or not talk enough?

2011-04-02 [kians mummy]: to much for this wiki, if you want to chat then click the chat link

2011-04-02 [All_Most PUNK]: But I like chatting here.

2011-04-02 [windowframe]: No, I don't think there's too much chatter here. :) It's not an official page, so how much chatter there is doesn't matter. And we're hardly swamped with comments. Plus, the comments that are here tend to be relevant to the topic of reading, so of course they're welcome. :)

@Pubky: Have you read any books at all so far this year?

2011-04-21 [Alexi Ice]: I LOVE this idea! I wish I would have found it sooner!!

2011-04-21 [Akayume]: (: It is pretty spiffy.

2011-04-21 [Alexi Ice]: I think I'm only going to list a *few* of the manga's I've read....>> Since I've probably read fifty this month alone. (manga whore!)

2011-04-21 [Akayume]: I used to read a lot of manga. Now I don't have the time/money. :(

2011-04-21 [Alexi Ice]: I read most of mine online, then if I really like them I go buy the series ^^

2011-04-21 [Akayume]: I try to buy them to support the industry, since it isn't doing too well right now.

2011-04-21 [Alexi Ice]: No kidding. Shojo Beat which was my absolute favorite manga based magazine went belly up not too long ago...I seriously thought I would cry!

On another note - I'm trying so hard to finish 'Fanboy and Gothgirl' but this book DRRRRRAAAAAGGGGGGGGGSSSSS!! I hate buying books and not finishing them though. Even if they are painfully boring.

2011-04-21 [Akayume]: DX Awwwwwwww.

2011-04-21 [Viking]: HUh...I need to get back to Blade of the Immortal some time.

2011-05-01 [Marlene'Jacques]: i've always got my nose in a book but am crap at actually reviewing them :(

2011-05-01 [windowframe]: Join anyway. :)

2011-05-01 [Marlene'Jacques]: okies :) just gotta remember what books i read recently lol

2011-05-22 [Mortified Penguin]: I haven't bought any manga in years. And I can't keep buying graphic novels either. Especially since there's no bookcase for them and they're just piled on my floor, providing living quarters for the floor spiders.

2011-05-22 [hanhepi]: et ate my comment. :(
anyway, as i tried to say before, if you go "liberate" a few milk crates from behind the grocery store, you can put the graphic novels in them, and keep the piles from sliding all over the place. then if you throw a board over the milk crates, you got end tables/night stands. bachelor furniture at its best.

2011-05-22 [Viking]: We used to use empty kegs with pieces of plywood over them.

2011-05-22 [hanhepi]: we got our deposit back for kegs, so they went back to the store pretty promptly. (although, my brother in law did turn a few kegs into a grill, which came out rather bad assed.) electrical spools -the big wooden ones the electric company has- also make awesome end tables, but you just can't beat the storage capacity of the milk crates in my opinion.

2011-05-22 [Viking]: We once 'found' some empty kegs behind a beer store. We decided to hold onto them for a bit before claiming any deposit money.

2011-05-23 [hanhepi]: ah! that explains a lot. yeah, those would have made very nice tables. XD chairs too, in a pinch.

2011-08-02 [Alexi Ice]: Finally updated mine after I don't know how long...>> Added my picture of my poor, poor copy of The Philosophers Stone, as well. Anyone want to buy me a new one?

2011-08-15 [Akayume]: I am never going to finish. *headdesk*

2011-08-15 [Alexi Ice]: I might...maybe. lol

2011-09-08 [windowframe]: Dissertation ruined my attempt for me so far this year – so many books started, so few finished. But I have a two-week window of opportunity after hand in and before the next course starts to try and fit some in.

2011-10-19 [Alexi Ice]: I'm so addicted to the series Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz right now. Anyone else read them?

2011-10-19 [Mortified Penguin]: Yes.

2011-12-09 [Eyden13]: there are just so many books I've forgot to put on here

2011-12-11 [Imperator]: *Thinks about making a Troll-ish comment in lieu of [kians mummy] but decides against it since this is [windowframe]'s wiki and all that*

In case anyone wants to witness the embarrassingly awkward spectacle of a genius totally out of his league, read some of Einstein's essays on economics. Shoulda stuck to science, Al.

2011-12-24 [Linderel]: Hmm. So not going to make it to my goal. Damn.

2011-12-28 [Akayume]: Me either. D: S'oke Lami.

2011-12-28 [Viking]: I won't make it either. I won't even match how many I read last year.

2011-12-28 [Akayume]: I'm so disappointed in myself. :( But with Uni and work I have no time for pleasure reading. It makes me sad.

2012-01-02 [Eyden13]: are we going to do one for 2012 as well? I'd like to if we could.

2012-01-02 [Synirria]: Me as well! I'd so join in the fun! lol

2012-01-02 [Linderel]: I already made my own wiki in anticipation of it xD

2012-01-02 [Synirria]: *Groans* Man!!! OVER ACHEIVER!!!!

2012-01-02 [Linderel]: Nah. It's more that I get carried away. :P

2012-01-02 [Akayume]: It's oke Lin. :P When I came to check this page I was hoping for a link to one for 2012...

2012-01-02 [Synirria]: *Pokes Akayume's cheek SOFTLY* I was only kidding...

2012-01-02 [Viking]: I almost made one earlier today, but was too lazy. Maybe when I actually finish another book.

2012-01-02 [Linderel]: So I set the wiki up. :P Shoo, go there. -> Reading Challenge 2012

2012-01-07 [Mirime]: 2012 totally snuck up on me :( ah well...

2012-01-09 [Caterin S.]: Damn, I missed my goal, it was pretty close though. :/
I'd love to take part in the Reading Challenge 2012 also, but as you might notice from my reading list, I still haven't written all the reviews of the last year, so I might skip the challenge... But I think I might make a few reviews of certain books in the future. I'm reading the Twilight series at the moment and boy I need to review it properly.
